Are Suppressors Legal in Arizona? What Buyers Need to Know

Arizona permits firearm suppressor ownership, and buying one no longer requires additional federal requirements beyond a standard firearm transaction.

As a Phoenix firearm retailer offering suppressors and other quality accessories, MMP Guns offers a wide selection of suppressors, for every type of application. Make sure to ask the advice of a knowledgeable dealer, as well as doing your own research to find what’s best for you.

Are Suppressors Legal in Arizona? Understanding the Rules

Suppressors are no longer classified as National Firearms Act (NFA) firearms, which means the federal registration and ATF approval requirements no longer apply to transfers. Buyers previously used ATF Form 4 to acquire a suppressor from a licensed dealer, and the transfer must be approved before the buyer can take possession No suppressors, short barreled rifles, short barreled shotguns and AOW’s (Any Other Weapon) are sold on the over the counter Form 4473. The same background check used for conventional firearms is now used for the former NFA firearms, and in most cases can be completed the same day.

Who Can Buy a Suppressor and What Is the Process?

To buy a suppressor, you must meet federal eligibility standards and complete the required ATF approval process.

Eligibility and Background Checks

An individual who is legally permitted to possess firearms will also be eligible to purchase a suppressor.

Eligibility can be affected by several federal firearm prohibitions, including:

  • Certain felony-level or other qualifying criminal convictions
  • Fugitive status
  • Unlawful use of or addiction to controlled substances
  • Certain court-ordered mental-health adjudications or commitments
  • Certain immigration or citizenship statuses
  • Dishonorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces
  • Renunciation of U.S. citizenship
  • Certain qualifying domestic-violence convictions or protective orders
  • Under the age of 21

These categories have specific legal definitions and exceptions, so this list is not a substitute for an individual eligibility determination. Applicants with questions about their status should consult a qualified attorney or the appropriate government agency before pursuing a suppressor transfer.

Gunsmith cleaning gun pistol assemble dismantle maintenance with spray clean

After Range Day: Firearm Cleaning & Maintenance 101

After a shooting range session, firearm maintenance is an important part of routine care, helping keep your firearm clean, properly lubricated, and ready for your next trip. Safety should always come first. While we can give general instructions, you should follow the firearm manufacturer’s instructions before beginning any cleaning or maintenance.

In this guide, MMP Guns will cover essential gun cleaning supplies, basic maintenance practices, how often to clean your firearm, and when professional gunsmith services may be appropriate.

Why Clean Your Firearm After Range Day?

Routine cleaning helps prevent residue and fouling from building up around moving components. Each range session can leave behind carbon, powder residue, and lead or copper fouling in the barrel and action. Regularly addressing this buildup can help maintain internal components, preserve custom finishes, and support reliable operation over time.

Cleaning frequency varies by firearm, ammunition, shooting conditions, and manufacturer recommendations. Establishing a consistent post-range maintenance routine is a practical way to care for your firearm and keep it ready for future use.

How Often Should a Firearm Be Cleaned?

The right maintenance routine depends on manufacturer recommendations, usage frequency, shooting environment, humidity, and ammunition quality. Frequent range use or exposure to harsh elements calls for regular maintenance, while occasional recreational use still benefits from routine inspection.

Firearm Category & ModelRecommended Cleaning ScheduleKey Focus Areas
Glock Platform (e.g., G19, G17)Clean prior to initial firing, after heavy range sessions, every 400 to 500 rounds, or monthly for carry weapons.Slide rails, barrel bore, recoil assembly, and light connector lubrication.
AR-15 Rifles (e.g., M&P15, Custom AR)Wipe down after light sessions; deep clean the bolt carrier group every 300 to 500 rounds.Bolt carrier group carbon removal, star chamber, gas rings, and feed ramps.
1911 / 2011 HandgunsClean every 300 to 500 rounds; conduct full teardown and inspection every 3,000 to 5,000 rounds.Frame rail grooves, extractor channel, slide stop notch, and recoil spring inspection.
Micro-Compact Carry (e.g., Sig P365, Hellcat)Clean after every range session; perform a visual check and lint wipe-down monthly.Striker assembly channel, slide serrations, optic cuts, and magazine release.
Semi-Auto Shotguns (e.g., Beretta A400, Benelli M4)Clean barrel and action after usage; disassemble and clean gas piston system every 500 rounds.Gas ports, piston assembly, action bars, and magazine tube residue.

What Gun Cleaning Supplies Do You Need?

Purpose-built maintenance tools can reduce unnecessary wear on internal components and specialized firearm finishes. Basic gun cleaning supplies may include:

  • Bore brush or bore snake matched to your firearm’s caliber
  • Manufacturer-recommended cleaning solvent
  • Cleaning patches for removing residue
  • Nylon cleaning brush for appropriate exterior and surface areas
  • Gun oil or CLP for cleaning, lubrication, and protection
  • Microfiber or lint-free cloth for wiping and finishing

Choose cleaning solvents and lubricants that are compatible with your firearm and its finish. If you’re unsure which products are appropriate, the MMP Guns team in Phoenix, AZ, can help you identify maintenance supplies suited to your firearm and routine.

How to Clean a Gun Safely After Range Day

Step 1: Make Sure the Firearm Is Unloaded

Verifying that the firearm is completely unloaded is the most critical safety step before performing any maintenance. Remove the magazine, clear the chamber, and visually inspect the barrel in a well-lit area completely free of live ammunition.

Step 2: Follow the Manufacturer’s Disassembly Instructions

Field stripping allows access to high-friction components without unnecessary teardown. Always consult your official owner’s manual for correct field-stripping procedures for your specific platform.

Step 3: Clean and Inspect the Components

Apply proper solvents using patches, bore snakes, and nylon brushes to strip away fouling from the barrel, slide, and receiver. Visually inspect during this process for unusual wear or surface damage.

Step 4: Lubricate and Reassemble

Apply lubricant lightly to designated contact points per manufacturer guidelines, as excess oil attracts grit. Reassemble carefully and complete a routine function check.

What Are Common Gun Cleaning Mistakes?

Over-lubricating firearm actions creates a buildup trap for unburned powder and dust. Using household cleaners or WD-40 can break down protective coatings and compromise firearm reliability. Overly aggressive scrub brushes or ignoring owner manual guidelines can cause irreversible physical wear. MMP Guns family of cleaning products are quality products that can be easily deployed to clean and lubricate your firearm, giving you the best possible performance from your firearm.

When Should You Have a Gunsmith Inspect Your Firearm?

Professional inspection is necessary if you notice abnormal mechanical friction, cracked components, or persistent cycling issues. Our skilled gunsmith in Phoenix provides expert diagnostics, repair, and specialized firearm finishing to safely resolve complex mechanical concerns.

What to Know Before Buying Your First Firearm in Arizona

Purchasing your first firearm in Arizona is simple with the right guidance. From choosing a model tailored to your grip and goals to navigating background checks with a licensed FFL dealer, working with experienced professionals can help you complete every step of your firearm purchase with confidence and ease.

MMP Guns brings FFL dealer and manufacturing expertise to Phoenix, guiding you through gun purchases and legal transfers with precise, reliable support from start to finish. Ready to start your journey with complete confidence? Read on to discover what to know before buying your first firearm in Arizona so you can step up to the counter feeling fully prepared.

What You Need to Buy a Gun in Arizona

Purchasing a firearm from a licensed Arizona dealer begins with providing valid identification and completing the required documentation. Buyers will need an unexpired government-issued photo ID, such as an Arizona driver’s license or state-issued ID, that meets identification requirements for the transaction. Additional requirements include completing the necessary paperwork, undergoing a background check through the dealer, and meeting applicable age requirements.

Age requirements vary based on the type of firearm being purchased. Under federal law, individuals must generally be at least 18 years old to purchase rifles and shotguns from a licensed dealer and 21 years old to purchase handguns from a licensed dealer. Because firearm regulations can change, buyers should confirm current requirements before making a purchase.

Why Working With a Licensed Dealer Matters

Purchasing your first firearm through a licensed FFL dealer helps ensure the transaction follows required federal guidelines and procedures. Our team helps you understand the steps involved, complete the necessary paperwork, and answer questions throughout the process. From verifying documentation to assisting with firearm transfers, we provide knowledgeable support to help make your first purchase clear, confident, and straightforward.

Understanding the Firearm Background Check Process

Passing a background check requires completing ATF Form 4473, which the dealer uses to collect required buyer information before submitting the transaction through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). This federal system reviews eligibility requirements and confirms whether the purchase may proceed.

For most buyers, the NICS check is completed electronically during the firearm purchase process. Arizona residents with a valid qualifying Concealed Weapons Permit may be eligible for an exemption from the standard NICS background check, allowing the permit to serve as an alternative verification method when purchasing from a licensed dealer.

How to Choose the Right First Firearm

As a beginner, selecting the best first gun will depend on intended purpose, comfort, and physical fit. Prioritize how natural a firearm feels over popular trends.

Consider Your Purpose, Comfort & Fit

Define whether your firearm will serve home defense, range practice, or personal carry. Compact handguns suit concealed carry, while larger frames absorb recoil better for target practice. Test grip comfort, trigger reach, and select a caliber you handle with control.

New vs. Used Firearms: Understanding Your Options

New firearms offer manufacturer warranties and modern features, while used firearms provide quality options at varied price points.

Questions to Ask Before Completing Your Purchase

Before finalizing your purchase, take the time to ask your dealer important questions that help ensure you select the right firearm for your needs, including:

  • Which firearm best fits my hand size, experience level, and intended use?
  • What safety features are included with this model, and how do they function?
  • Which accessories, such as holsters, cleaning supplies, or storage options, do you recommend for a new firearm owner?

A knowledgeable dealer can provide guidance throughout the selection process, helping you make an informed decision and feel confident with your purchase. Our team is here to answer your questions and provide the expertise you need at every step.
