Frequently Asked Questions

How old do I have to be to buy a firearm in Arizona?

Buyers must be at least 18 years old to purchase long guns, such as rifles and shotguns, from a licensed federal dealer. To purchase handguns or handgun ammunition, buyers must be at least 21 years of age under federal regulations. Additional eligibility requirements, including legal background standards, apply to all buyers.

What ID and documents do I need to buy a firearm in Arizona?

Purchasers must present a valid, current government-issued photo ID showing their full legal name and current physical address. If your state-issued identification shows a previous address, you must provide supplemental government documentation showing your current physical residence address. Contact our team in Phoenix, AZ before your transaction to confirm acceptable proof of residence.

Is there a waiting period to buy a gun in Arizona?

For buyers 21 years of age or older, Arizona law does not require a state waiting period to purchase a firearm. For buyers 18 to 21 years of age, the Safer Community Act of 2023 provides for a mandatory waiting period of up to 10 days. Buyers could be proceeded the same day, but should be prepared to be 10 days at a maximum. Once you complete the required paperwork and the federal background check is approved, you can finalize the transfer immediately. Processing times depend on the federal background check system’s response speed.

How does the background check work, and how long does it take?

Licensed dealers process background checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System prior to completing a firearm transfer. Most background checks yield an instant response within minutes, though some inquiries may experience administrative delays. Background checks are required for transactions to verify legal eligibility.

Does an Arizona CCW change the firearm purchasing process?

A valid Arizona Concealed Weapons permit allows qualified buyers to skip the standard background check system requirement at the time of purchase. Permit holders must still complete federal Form 4473 and present their valid permit alongside a government-issued photo ID. This streamlines the purchasing process while maintaining full regulatory compliance. Note: Buyers must present their valid CCW card before completing the Form 4473, once the associate starts the background check process, it cannot be stopped.

Can I have a firearm shipped to MMP Guns for a transfer?

MMP Guns processes firearm transfers for items purchased from outside vendors. Standard firearm shipments sent to our shop must include a photocopy of a valid driver’s license or state-issued identification card, along with contact information for an FFL in your area if returning an item.

How do suppressor and NFA purchases work?

National Firearms Act items, including suppressors, no longer require additional federal paperwork, tax stamp registration, and specialized ATF approval before transfer. MMP Guns accepts items for custom services, including gun blueing, 24K gold plating, and custom laser engraving. Speak with our specialized team to understand specific NFA handling and transfer procedures.

What is MMP Guns’ transfer fee?

Transfer fees are $29.99 per item transferred; this includes previously designated “NFA” items. Active duty or previous members of the US Military with ID can receive one free transferred item monthly.
